What is a SAFE Space?
A SAFE Space is a participating business or organization that helps individuals access Safe Monroe's confidential services. If someone feels unsafe or needs help, they can enter a SAFE Space and ask to connect with Safe Monroe.
How It Works
Train
Train with a Safe Monroe advocate to know how to support survivors who enter needing support.
Welcome
Show your business is a SAFE Space with the window decal and offer a respectful, non-judgemental environment.
Connect
Provide hotline information, phone access, or privacy if available.
Leave the Rest to Safe Monroe
Our trained advocates provide support, resources, and safety planning.
If Someone Needs Help
Remain calm and listen without judgment. Let the individual know they are welcome and ask how you can help connect them to Safe Monroe. If available, offer a phone or private space where they can contact our 24-hour hotline.
That's okay. You are not expected to be a counselor or expert. A simple response such as:
"I'm glad you came in. Let's see how we can connect you with Safe Monroe."
If possible, allow them to use a business phone or their own phone in a safe location. You may also provide Safe Monroe's hotline number:
570-421-4200
Our trained advocates are available 24 hours a day to provide support and guidance.
If someone is in immediate danger, has been injured, or requires emergency assistance, call 911 immediately.
After emergency services have been contacted, Safe Monroe can provide additional support and advocacy.
Prioritize the safety of everyone involved. Do not attempt to intervene physically or escalate the situation. If you believe there is an immediate threat, call 911.
Participating businesses will receive guidance and resources from Safe Monroe, so staff understand the purpose of the Safe Space program and how to respond appropriately.
Anyone seeking support related to domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking, or other forms of abuse may use a SAFE Space. Friends, family members, and concerned community members may also contact Safe Monroe for information and guidance.
