Butterfly Release 2026 Header (2)

Each year, Safe Monroe invites our community to gather for the Butterfly Release for Peace, an evening of remembrance, reflection, and hope for victims and survivors of domestic and sexual abuse.

As hundreds of butterflies take flight, they become a living symbol that hope can emerge even after life's most difficult moments.

Whether you attend in support of a loved one, in honor of a survivor, in memory of someone lost, or simply because you believe everyone deserves safety and peace, your presence makes a difference.

Why Butterflies?

Butterflies are a powerful metaphor for survivors of domestic and sexual abuse for several reasons:

Transformation and Growth
From a caterpillar to a chrysalis and finally emerging as a butterfly, this process symbolizes growth, change, and the potential for a new beginning.

Emergence from Darkness
The chrysalis stage happens in isolation and darkness. This can represent the difficult and often private struggle that survivors endure as they work through trauma.

Delicate Strength
Butterflies are delicate creatures, yet they are capable of enduring long migrations and difficult environments. Survivors may appear vulnerable due to their experiences but possess incredible inner strength and resilience.

Symbol of Hope and Renewal
Butterflies are often seen as symbols of hope, renewal, and the beauty of life. For survivors, the butterfly can represent hope for a better future, the renewal of self-worth, and the possibility of finding joy again.

Freedom and Independence
As butterflies are free to fly wherever they choose, they symbolize the freedom and independence that survivors strive to regain after escaping abusive situations.
