A Tragedy in Our Community: A Reminder of the Importance of Safety and Support
When tragedy strikes our own community, particularly when lives are lost and a young child is involved, it is difficult not to search for and want answers. Our hearts are with everyone affected by the devastating incident at Great Wolf Lodge.
As the investigation continues, it is important to allow our law enforcement to establish the facts and complete their full investigation. While the incident has been described as domestic in nature, we do not know the full circumstances or whether there was a history of domestic violence or abuse. We must be careful not to make assumptions about this particular family.
However, this tragedy reminds us of the importance of recognizing the broader issue of violence within families and intimate partner relationships. Domestic violence can affect people from every background, and it is not always visible to those around them. Warning signs such as threats, escalating intimidation, stalking, and controlling behavior should never be dismissed. At the same time, we cannot assume every tragedy is preceded by recognizable warning signs.
People experiencing abuse may face significant barriers to seeking help; including fear, financial dependence, concerns for their children, and uncertainty about what will happen next. Leaving an abusive relationship is rarely simple or safe, but everyone deserves to be met with compassion, support, and the opportunity to explore options for safety without judgment.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Safe Monroe invites our community to come together in supporting survivors and their families. Our annual “Candlelight Vigil: Shine A Light For Healing” will take place Thursday, October 22 at 5:30 pm at Courthouse Square in Stroudsburg. This impactful event offers an opportunity to honor those whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence, remember lives lost, and reaffirm our shared commitment to ending abuse.
Safe Monroe provides free, confidential, trauma-informed services to people impacted by domestic and sexual abuse; including a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, counseling, and legal advocacy. You do not need to have filed a police report or made the decision to leave a relationship to reach out for support.
If you or someone you know needs help, Safe Monroe’s 24-hour hotline is 570-421-4200. No one should have to navigate concerns about their safety alone.
Together, we can build a community where safety is not a privilege, asking for help is met with compassion, and everyone has the opportunity to live free from abuse.
