Safe Monroe, Where Abuse Ends & Hope Begins!
Women’s Resources of Monroe County, a nonprofit organization that provides free and confidential services to victims of domestic and sexual abuse, has rebranded to become Safe Monroe. The identity change reflects that the organization is a safe haven, not only for women, but for anyone directly or indirectly affected by domestic and sexual abuse – of any sex, gender identity or age.
“We’ve been serving the Monroe County community for over 43 years, compassionately empowering victims of domestic and sexual abuse to become survivors through free and confidential counseling, advocacy and shelter,” said Lauren Peterson, executive director of Safe Monroe. “We help people who are directly affected by abuse, and those who are indirectly affected including family and friends.
“Changing our name to Safe Monroe represents a significant milestone for our organization as it aligns our identity with our mission and our vision for a safe community for everyone. Our new brand reflects the inclusive and welcoming environment we strive to create for anyone who needs our support."
The decision to become Safe Monroe was reached after extensive consultation with stakeholders including survivors, staff, volunteers and community partners. The process involved thoughtful reflection of the organization’s core values and its dedication to providing safety and empowerment for anyone in Monroe County impacted by abuse. Informed by the insights gathered, the organization determined that it was time to transform its identity to better reflect who it serves and what it does.
“We spent considerable time thinking deeply about the need to evolve and how to make it clear that we provide comprehensive support and services to any and all who are affected by abuse,” Peterson said.
Safe Monroe’s free and confidential services include a 24-hour hotline staffed by trained crisis advocates; a safe house providing secure shelter for individuals fleeing abuse; individual counseling and support groups for victims, survivors and family members; 24/7 medical advocacy and accompaniment; and legal advocacy and court accompaniment. All services are available in Spanish as well as in other languages via a translator line. Safe Monroe also raises awareness and prevents abuse through community outreach, prevention education and training.
“As Safe Monroe embarks on this new chapter, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence,” Peterson said. “Our new identity embodies our belief that everyone deserves a safe space, free from fear, free from violence and free from abuse. We extend our gratitude to the Monroe County community for its steadfast support over the years and look forward to continuing our mission under our new name.”
